南太平洋におけるアメリカの水爆実験は海水を汚染するばかりではなく生態系にも影響を及ぼしていた。激減した餌を求めてミンダナオ海溝の奥深くから巨大な怪物が這い出し、航行中の船舶を次々に襲撃した。やがて怪物の正体は巨大なタコと判明したものの、海軍の爆雷攻撃も功を奏せず、遂にサンフランシスコ湾に出現。巨大な触手は金文橋（ゴールデンゲートブリッジ）を破壊し市街へも侵入を開始した。対する軍隊は陸と海の両面攻撃を実行したが・・・。

Early Ray Harryhausen creature feature about a radiation enhanced, giant octopus (with only 6 tentacles) attacking the west coast of the U.S. climaxing at the Golden Gate bridge. The creature effects were wonderful to watch as it threatens several ships and rips the bridge apart making them the obvious highlight of the film. But the stuff in between ...sheesh. The writers seem to have a hard time giving us a plausible story making everything sort of silly and, even considering the sexual moors of the 50's, the relationship dynamics were just plain bizarre.
