数年間の労苦の後、カーグレイヴス博士とセイヤー将軍は、実業家バーンズの援助を受けて、原子式天体飛行艇を設計した。かくて月世界征服の第一号飛行艇はバーンズ、セイヤー、カーグレイヴスの三人と若い技術家スウィニーをのせて地球を飛立ち、途中さまざまのスリルを体験しつつ、月の北部にあるハーパラス噴火口に到着した。彼らは探検の経過を、ラジオによって地球に伝えつづけたが、いよいよ帰途につくに当り、艇の重量が月の引力を離れるには重すぎることが判明した。一行はあらゆるものを捨て去り、ついに地球との連絡の唯一の手段であるラジオまで残して艇の人となった。艇が次第に接近して行く地球では、全世界の人類が彼らの成果を待ちわびていた。

Post-war science fiction like this is oddly optimistic. In this case, it is also foolhardingly patriotical, capitalistic, and extremely cynical. It's almost as if you're watching the film version of Jules Verne's work about traveling to the moon, considering how little time is spent actually working out how to get to the moon and instead delving into how to rip a set apart in order to strip weight from a rocket. The characters are weird and feel very much at home in a story like this, whereas in reality, they would never have gotten into this situation. It's a strangely comforting movie because of its optimism, but infuriating because of everything else. The production value is fantastic given the time and the effects with stop motion astronauts whenever there is a wide shot is great. Note that some of the shots of space helmets have glass in them and some do not. I'm guessing they weren't very comfortable for the actors to wear on set.
