Jon Erwin’s Young Washington stepped onto the July 4th box office stage carrying a heavy burden of expectation and technical skepticism, yet it ultimately delivers a crowd-pleasing, deeply patriotic theatrical experience. Rather than presenting the flawless, untouchable monument found on a dollar bill, the narrative’s greatest asset is its willingness to focus squarely on Washington’s early military failures during the French and Indian War. By examining how these formative, often devastating missteps shaped his ultimate character, the script uncovers a refreshing layer of human vulnerability underneath the historical armor. While the thematic emphasis on "Divine Providence" leans slightly glorified, it remains anchored enough in the documented mindset of the era to avoid feeling entirely like folklore.

The film relies heavily on newcomer William Franklyn-Miller to carry the emotional and physical weight of the production. Backed by sparse, limited appearances from seasoned veterans like Ben Kingsley, Andy Serkis, and Kelsey Grammer, Franklyn-Miller commands the screen by projecting a distinct blend of youthful ambition and stiff, eighteenth-century civility.

Visually, the film easily survives its pre-release tech controversy. The realtime digital hybrid environments and AI-assisted background effects are seamless enough that casual viewers will never find their immersion broken. While Kristopher Kimlin’s cinematography isn't the most breathtaking work put to film, it is highly competent, capturing the isolation of the early American frontier without drawing distracting attention to its digital stitching.

The narrative momentum falters only when it reaches the explosive final act at the Monongahela ambush. Here, the production trades the gritty, grounded historical realism of films like The Patriot for traditional Hollywood blockbuster tropes. By hyper-stylizing Washington’s legendary survival into a superhero spectacle, the film briefly loses its human heart to chase an over-the-top action high. Despite leaning too hard into an action-hero caricature during the climax, Young Washington remains an engaging, earnest look at a leader's birth through fire—leaving audiences cheering and fully delivering on the exact holiday energy it promised.

***What George Washington was doing in 1753-1755 when he was 21-23yo***

The film covers Washington’s learning years at Ferry Farm in Fredericksburg; his ambitious pursuits in Williamsburg (which is located 140 miles to the southeast of the farm in Virginia); his trip to the Ohio Country, which would be southwestern Pennsylvania today, where he did some quality surveying, met Mingo warror "Half-King" Tanacharison, as well as French-Canadian militarist Joseph Jumonville. The eventual bloodshed would spark the French and Indian War that would last from 1754-1763. The Jumonville Glen Ambush, The Battle of Fort Necessity and The Battle of the Monongahela are all covered.

The events of “The Last of the Mohicans” (1992) take place 2 years after the end of this film. I bring this up because, if you like that movie, you’ll appreciate “Young Washington,” although it’s not as artistic or all-around entertaining. It’s still well done, although there aren’t any mountains in Fredericksburg and George’s older brother, Lawrence, died in the summer of 1752. Also check out “Follow the River” (1992) and “Alone Yet Not Alone” (2008) for accounts of historical Indian attacks and kidnappings of settlers in 1755.

At around 6’2” in height, George stood about 6-8 inches taller than the average person at the time. William Franklyn-Miller was a good fit for the role.    

It runs 2h and was shot Aug-Oct 2025 in eastern Ireland at microWild nature preserve on Blessington Lake, which is located 20 miles southwest of Dublin in County Wicklow.

I like movies set in historical times, so I was looking forward to this. Unfortunately, it has disappointed me.

Let's start from beginning, main actor. Main actor could, and should have been better actor, but he could pass if rest of the movie were good.

The worst parts of the movie were how whole story seems rushed, dialogue skipped at times. I understand that they covered almost a decade of his life, but still, it started OK, then they rushed trough the middle, just to focus at the end battle which was pretty bad IMO. Washington was extremely sick, barely talking, just to rise as he hears sounds of battle, and couple of minutes later he's running all over the battlefield, side riding the horse, leading men in charge,... Complete bullshit, only kids and American public could swallow this.

Another such point in the movie was somewhere in the middle, where Washington and his friend fell into a river in the middle of winter, and somehow they don't freeze to death even though they don't lite a fire, and only couple of hours later in the night, river freezes all over so thick they can walk over it.

Only thing I can say about this movie, it's typical Hollywood movie of new era. Bad script, bad directing, and made for people with IQ under 70.
